Legendary stories of the high seas, buried treasure, and villains with peg legs and eye patches- what’s not to love in a pirate story? Whenever I bring a pirate themed picture book to one of my young learners’ creative writing classes, we always have a whale of a time. We play videos of stormy seas and mysterious shores to set the tone for the lesson. Then, my students work in groups studying yellowed maps, solving clues that would lead them to hidden treasures. If I inform them in advance, my students would even turn up dressed as Jack Sparrows and Pirate Princesses.
Do you have a little one at home who can’t get enough of pirate stories? Here’s a list of five Common Room- approved picture books that will have your little scallywag talk like a pirate in no time! These picture books for 5-7 year olds, with adequately challenging text, vibrant illustrations and plot twists are sure to keep your young reader engaged the whole day.
